UNIVERSITY OF IOWA STANLEY MUSEUM OF ART

Though it was wiped out by a flood over a decade ago, this museum rebuilt a fresh approach to create a place that is welcoming, intimate and a bit quirky. It prioritizes a warm lobby opening to an intimate plaza, gallery/classrooms and classroom/galleries, and a rooftop terrace view out to the (presently calm) river in order to create a museum focused on meeting students where they are with the plan to make it where they want to be.

Placing the museum next to the library is part of the invitation – both are places where students can engage with collections. In fact, teaching museums such as this are many students’ first encounters with an art museum.
